Southern Tasmania Wineries and Vineyards

Central to the exploration of the vineyards of Southern Tasmania is the city of Hobart. Most vineyards are scattered around rivers and bays for their tempering effects. The vineyard area is carefully selected so the vines are protected from cold southerly winds and for maximum exposure to the sun. The distinct varietals of this region are table and sparkling wines including Chardonnay, Gewurztraminer, Pinot Noir, Riesling and Sauvignon Blanc.

The Coal River Valley is located to the north east of Hobart including the towns of Cambridge, Campania, Richmond and Tea Tree. The area has several cellar doors including Meadowbank Estate which has established a fine restaurant and an events program.

The Derwent Valley is another area which is graced by vineyards as the valley follows the Derwent River.

To the south of Hobart is the magnificent Huon Valley. The Huon River runs through this valley where it flows into the D'Entrecasteaux Channel. There are many respected wineries in this area, many of them creating a distinct Pinot Noir.
