Adelaide Hills Wineries and Vineyards

The Adelaide Hills wine region is part of the Mount Lofty Ranges, located on the eastern boundary of Adelaide. The region is one of South Australia's largest and oldest wine regions. Vines were first planted in 1839 with a case of Adelaide Hills wine delivered to Queen Victoria 5 years later.

The region is responsible for many premium wines, the foremost wines of the region are Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and Sauvignon Blanc. Other varieties grown are Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Semillon and Shiraz. Winemakers are now concentrating on rare varietals including the German Trollinger and Lemberger grapes and the Italian Arneis, Nebbiolo and Sangiovese.

The area is popular with tourists for its beautiful scenery, wine and cellar doors, award winning restaurants and boutique hotels. A popular destination is the German town of Hahndorf which is full of gingerbread style shops selling bratwurst and other German treats both sweet and savoury.
